Hinnom Issue 004 Cover Design
This is the front/back cover design for Issue #004 of Hinnom Magazine, a horror fiction magazine which was published by Gehenna & Hinnom Books, edited by C.P. Dunphey, and released in December 2017, which explains the yuletide theme. In this particular design, the Yule demon, Krampus, pays a visit to one unlucky family, delivering to them all manner of holiday cheer... or should I say 'fear'?
After discussing various ideas w/ editor, I go to work sketching on top of text layer from the cover I did before as a guide for the overall composition (to keep things consistent).
After seeing my extremely rough sketch, the editor sends me his feedback, we make a few adjustments to the content and I proceed with the line work.
From there, it's onto flat colors and tones...
...then highlights and texture. I pull the textures from scans I've made of some experiments on paper I've done using coffee and bleach to get distressed effect.
I refine more & more, adding additional textures and effects. Then it's time for adding a border, the title, credits, and other necessary text.
I also have to create a back cover and for that I recycle a lot of the elements from the front cover, adding in the required text and company logo.
Both the back & front cover together w/ a spine based on template/dimensions given by the printer.
Additional graphics are made from the original design for use in social media advertising. There's room for experimentation at this stage, and that's cool. The above was used for Instagram/Twitter.
